I have a 1986 Mariner 75 Hp, this is a remounted engine back on the same boat it came off of. It is hooked up correctly but I have no spark. Turns over fine and PTT works fine. Any idea what to look at first. I do have a repair manual on the way, however it is a week or 2 away? Any help would be appreciated, Thank you in advance for any suggestions.:(

PS The stripers are running on the river and I am SOL

All cyl not firing (4), brand new battery, it poped the other day on 2+2carb cleaner so I am assuming there was spark then? But none now on an inline spark tester? Help Please?

check all wiring esspecially where they come out of the staotr under the flywhell and see if there is any corrosion on them. if on ly a few where firing it may indicate the switchbox is bad but you need to do alot more testing they are not cheap and you want to find the problem not start throwing parts on it that would get really expensive so do a good visual first thing

Disconnect the wiring harness on the boat end, (if you do this you will have no way to stop the spark should the engine be running) have your spark tester ready (you will have to invest in a remote starter). Crank the engine and check for spark, if you have spark problem is in the remote control. But you will probably have to invest in a DVA and multimeter and wait for the manual.

Re: Really looking for some advice on where to start?

Ok great advice thanks.....the wire harness has the typical "brittle" look to it. I have a remote starter Jeff, and will try that (should have thought about that?) If I do get spark with the harness disconected is it a simple key switch, or more? I am going to wait on the Manual before I tear into this thing. Another quick question, when I turn the engine over the prop spins like it is in gear...I know this is no
the "correct term" but could this be a neutral safety switch type thing, and if so I would think the engine would not crank? Just looking for some thoughts!

some shifters do have a neutral saftey switch that will not allow the engine to start in Fowrd or reverse. This could be the issue. You say the prop spins in neutral when trying to start it? if this is the case after you dislodge the harness you should get spark indicating a shifter issue. also I would check the shifter for extreem wear and cable adjustment

Re: Really looking for some advice on where to start?

I just ran out in the garage and looked at stator wires, one is not looking to heathy, cracked and split...I believe that may be one problem...the shifter is a problem also I believe.....I cannot get the prop to spin free (neutral) spinning it by hand strokes the engine (compression)? I am thinking I may have 2 problems here? Have you ever removed a flywheel on one of these? I had a Force that was just flat out a bit...h and if I grab a new stator do I need any special tools for flywheel removal? I am Johnrude guy.....but I really really like this Mariner so I may be converted LOL?

Actually I just blew up your picture....I do not have the rope slots and it has an additional plate on top.....my stator wires have the ring ends with rubber boots on them...little different

that may be a recoil cover on the flywheel you have an older model this is from a 1997 40 HP merc 4 cyl 4 stroke but fits on mariner quite a few different modlesm. Man I gotta stop typing in the dark. Pleas before you unbolt the flywheel from the hub MARK IT Wtha permanent marker to be sure you put it back on exactly how you took it off or you will be forever trying to refigure the timing. Then remove, inspect and test the Stator

Neutral safety switch will prevent cranking, however the kill switch.......
been there, done that.
