I am so sorry for your loss, JB. I know how you feel.
My dog Elijah passed away last Monday after a two day bout of something. It just happened so fast, which I guess is good in a way. My Molly-dog is our one-an-only now. We all miss him and feel an empitness that won't subside.
Know that we are all grieving with you.
Bassy(Linda)

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

A sad day for sure, JB And Bassy The cruelness of this world that rears it's ugly head daily, leads me to believe that there is a better place for the human spirit to exist. Yet, for now, we are just one more "species" trying to survive.
I only ponder the reasons why some believe all other life forms are exempt. I hold out hope and faith that God has that base covered...Even if we do not.

I just want to echo the sentements above as I can't say it any better. And since I'm copying, let me quote you by wishing you "Red Sky At Night" as that can't be said any better either.

Levittownnick

Sorry about Catzilla JB.
You will never replace that cat, but you can replace the companionship you had. Go out and get you another cat, not to replace Catzilla with, but to have another one for the companionship you had with Catzilla.

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

I will consider a new cat, but I am also considering a dog.

I like dogs better than I like cats, but:
Dogs require much more attention and care.
A dog might drive many wild critters away from the house.
I couldn't leave a dog alone if I am going to be away for several days.

On the other hand, dogs want only to please, cats mostly want to be served.

My #1 daughter, the cat lady, suggested that I think about a small, mostly indoor, dog that likes to travel, likes cats, is middle aged and laid back, likes cats and is easy to care for. Plus, of course, another cat.

What do you guys think? What about a middle aged beagle and a new cat? Lap dog? Doxie?

Daughters have labs and goldens (and cats). Love those dogs. What great pals they are to old and young alike.

Not making any decisions until I return from LOTW first week of July. That gives you time to influence me. :)

BTW, momma doe has been wandering around my yard since the tragedy. I don't think she understands what happened to her fawn and is looking for it. :(

JB I love wild life. And I pretty much feel the same as you about it. That doe lives around you under your protection. It trusts you not to harm it and has become confortable sharing your environment. The wolve has taken advantage of that fact and discovered your sanctuary. Its your territory, your the king beast, and hes gottin way too close. Drop him and send us a pic.

Exactly, Confusious couldnt have said it better. I dont know where to establish this radius, Maby 500 yds. Whatever your rifles range is I reckon. :)It (the wolf) aint on the endangered list in this part of Tx. Fish and wildlife will tell you thier ain any full wolves in Tx.

Sorry JB. This is one of those times when your head fights with your heart. You know in the natural order that deer are there to be somethings dinner but when they are "your" deer it is different. Your head says that this is how it should be but your heart says to make the wolf assume room temp. Good luck with your decision. By the way I bet effective range of the .243 would be at least 300 yds!

Sorry to hear. Impossible to describe the relationship between a pet and owner, except to say they are frequently more valued than ones we may share with people. Mourn your friend, your sorrow is indicative of your bond.

About the wolf, I don't know any advise other than the advise you have given me has been spot on over the years. I am sure you will do what is best.

Thats heartbreaking JB,
If you decide to get another pet consider rescuing one from a shelter.
Thousands are put down every day...what a shame.
About the beagle,I have owned 2 before and they are great dogs.
The best dog i ever had was a boxer mixed with a little shepard of some kind.
I had to have him put down after having him 14 years because of arthritus..Hardest thing i ever had to do.I held him on my lap when they give him the shot..
Prayers for ya JB

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

Suppose that wolf is a (correct term for a female canid) with a den full of hungry pups, OJ and heycods? They are a rare species (Red Wolf) this far west and there is some disagreement about whether it would even be legal to harm it.

The God I believe in does not favor any form of life over any other. Who am I to disagree? True, I "knew" the fawn and grieve its passing, but to quote Her Majesty, "Grief is the price we pay for love".

Momma doe will have another fawn or two next year, and she will be smarter. I will have another cat and it will dwell indoors. As long as the wolf sticks to what his/her job is and doesn't intrude on mine I will not intrude. He/She will kill a lot more varmints than pets.

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

Sorry to hear the bad news JB.

Sounds like you have the right sort of setup for a decent sized dog - plenty of room to run around...and very useful for security - just a matter of weighing up the pros and cons as you say.

I vote a BIG YES on the dog issue. My current "best friend" is a Black Lab/Blue Heeler and I think he's the best I've ever had. Thought the best one was an affectionate boxer that lived to be 14. I've had dogs all my life and would always suggest someone getting one if they're ever "on the fence".

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

So sorry about Catzilla, JB. The loss of a longtime companion is heartbreaking. I'm glad, however to see that you and I share the same feelings about the fauna in our respective spaces. If we are to truly enjoy it for what it is, then we should to try to disrupt as little of it as possible.
BTW, I adopted a homeless Lab- Border Collie mix that was absolutely scary-smart. I recommend either breed or, like mine, a combination of the two if you're lucky enough to find one.

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

My condolences too JB.
The doe knows exactly what happend and she sticks around only because she can't help herself, she's still a mom for a while yet.

I've always been a dog guy since I was a kid. I've had all types and I've spent some big money on some of them. However, the best handsdown is a pup from a shelter. All the shelter pups I've gotten have always been extremely devoted, smart and extra-ordinary. It seems that they go through the stress of being abandoned and living in confusion and once they are given a second chance by being adopted it seems they don't take the gesture for granted.
