I hope this is the right place for this question.
I need to replace the rear wheel bearing on a 1997 chev. Is there a forum I can go to, or is that info available here? I tow my boat with this car and want to go fishing.

Re: rear bearings

The car is 1997 lumina, the sounds I hear are a constant bump-bump as if a bearing is broken or whatever is in that housing. the car is front wheel drive so I expect a smaller problem than if it was in the front wheel.

Re: rear bearings

It may be a broken shock, loose lug nut, or way loose bearing,as you are thinking.
I would fing out just what is bumping,by jacking it up on that side, and wiggling the wheel (tire and all),and listening. Is it making the noise when you wiggle the wheel? Is it silent? If it is making the bumping noise, is it comming from the center of the hub area? I think it will have shoe as opposed to disc brakes, but iether way, a pad or shoe could've come loose.

At any rate, the bearings are pretty much standard back there, so it's not a hard job, with the right tools...Just very messy. So when you pick up the parts, get a good size pack of rags and some GoJo or other good hand cleaner:)
Let us know how we can help.
In the meantime, here is a link that may help....
ABOUT WHEEL BEARINGS

Re: rear bearings

Wheel bearings typically growl or whirrrrrrrrr when bad. I'd suspect a tire problem. Swap front tire to rear, and see if the problem follows the tires....
