Rear engine mounts

Hi guys,

I have a 2000 stingray 190LX with a merc 4.3L v6 and a alpha 1 gen II outdrive. This is my first I/O boat that I bought at the end of last season. My question is regarding the rear engine mounts. While I had the drive off this winter I checked the alignment and found it a bit tight but it would go in with what I'd call heavy hand pressure. I had to raise the front engine mounts 4-1/2 turns to get a nice smooth tool fit. Checked at 90deg increments, all is good. I thought this amount of adjustment seemed excessive and started looking at rear mounts. I found that the port side rear mount is not down on the fiber washer. I measured .222" with feeler gauges between washer and mount ear on engine bell housing. I think it has been this way since new as I have found plenty of sloppy workmanship on this boat. I had put the adjustment back and then used an arrangement of hardware to drive the mount down to the washer and tried the tool and it is nowhere close to even starting into the engine ( no surprise ). Removed the hardware arrangement and the mount returned to its original raised position. It looks like the isolator that is pressed into the mount ear is not all the way up in its bore. So i put the alignment back to perfect for the current conditions. Question is, is this a big issue? My plan is to just monitor the mount and see if it continues to move. If it does then I guess I have to pull the motor and change the mount. Also I was going to lower the trim up limit switch setting a few deg to keep the drive lower.

All input is appreciated
Thanks
Rich.

Re: Rear engine mounts

You certainly want to get the rear mounts correct and then do the alignment with adjusting the forward mounts. The fact that you had to adjust the forward mounts 4 turns ( or so) may indicate an issue with the engine mount stringers. So, take a look at what is supporting the forward mounts.

also, keep in mind that the gimbal bearing will swivel a bit so the the alignment bar will make initial contact with the coupler. If you have reset the rear mounts, you may just have to give the gimbal bearing a 'tweak' with the alignment bar in order to get it to meet the coupler correctly. Form there it is a mater of adjusting the forward mounts so that the alignment bar slides smoothly.

so, get the rear mounts correct and take it from there.

the rear mount DOES NOT SIT ON THE FIBRE WASHER .

Re: Rear engine mounts

So I have the starboard rear mount sitting on the fiber washer and the port rear mount up .222" from its fiber washer. I thought I read that they should be sitting on the washers, this is incorrect? Either way I'd say that something is not quite right. Has anyone changed rear mounts before?

Re: Rear engine mounts

How much space is there typically between fiber washer and rear engine mount ear? I'm trying to decide if this needs to be addressed this year or if I can wait till next winter. Starting to get nice here in New England really don't want to pull motor now.

So maybe my issue is with starboard mount? This one is sitting on washer.

Re: Rear engine mounts

for a long time the manual said to glue them in place but we left them loose.as long as you could spin them you were good. When they did get tight ,we pulled the motors to replace them as a precaution. Once the engine alignment goes away, the coupler is quietly destroyed. no noise at all until the very end. Sometimes we found the "double wound " washer had split

What does that felt washer actually do anyway :noidea: Maybe just a fail-safe in case the double wound washer cracks ?

Re: Rear engine mounts

keeps the inner transom plate from being destroyed by the rear engine mount if the bushings break free.
