So things went well tonight, I replaced the cap, rotor, condenser, coil, plugs and wires.

Old cap, looks worn to me

I knew when I wrote this it would come back to bite me!!!!!!!
Give me a bit, I'm uploading some pictures to show what I discovered. Shouldn't even be telling anyone this but you'll get a good laugh and the motor needed a tune up anyways. So rookie... so so rookie

Whatya break?

Ok, the funny part is coming...

Here is a pic of the old plugs from left to right cylinders 1-4
A bit tough to see in the picture but notice how 1 and 2 electrode show a normal light grey color burn on the electrode? 3-4 are all black...

Oh and one last clue. Just before I hoisted the motor into the boat a few weeks ago I wanted to start it and warm it up and change the oil. I figured since it sat all winter I would remove the plugs and squirt a tbsp of engine oil into the cylinders first. I re-installed the plugs and wires and tried to start it.

Very hard to start, strange it started so good in the fall but not now. Got it running but stalled several times, finally got it running and kept it reving a bit to warm it up, used a liter of fuel and shut it down, changed the oil and done.

Here is the best picture of the main reason for not starting, stalling at idle and severe shaking.

I remember having a huge brain fart when I hooked up the plug wires. It's clear in the pic the order I have is 1-4-3-2 instead of 1-3-4-2
I was looking at the cap counter clockwise thinking 1-2-3-4 and it clockwise so 1-4-3-2 would be the order. Explains plugs 3-4 all black and 1-2 were still correct and looked good. I'm also no stranger to seeing misfires causing shaking so I can imagine running on two cylinders might explain the motor looking like it was going to break off the rear mounts!!!

Sorry for the long story, thought you deserved it all. As I said it needed a tune up so I know where everything is at. I'm pretty sure this thing is going to run as smooth as a whistle next time i start it.
Like I said so so SO rookie. oh well it wasn't the worst lesson I've learned on this rebuild.

That is an easy mistake to make. As is, and I keep doing it , leaving the rotor out of the distributor after changing points, condenser etc. I turn the key and all it does is crank over, not firing. I sit there scratching my head (and whatever else is handy), thinking "It ran before the tune-up"!.... You know the rest....

Cheers,

Chris.....

Yep I guess so, probably happens to almost everyone once in a while.
I couldn't keep myself from at least starting it tonight. Ran very well, no violent shaking!

I will check dwell and timing and adjust the fuel mixture soon so should be even better!
Thanks for all the help!

Been following your thread in the resto forum and glad to see you sorted out your runnin issue all part of the game ! it happens to all of us. One thing I have learned is to double check my work before proceeding to the next step and even then I still miss things from time to time.

Sounds really sweet. Don't use too many revs on the flushers (1500 maximum). If you starve the water pump you'll be replacing it.
