Hello,

I recently found a 1999 Yamaha 115 4 stroke in really good condition for $2000. Is this reasonable, a good deal even? the engine runs perfect, not sure of the hours, used in both fresh and salt water. Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

According to the NADA guide, no such motor exists.

However, according to that source, the price is in the ballpark for a '99 Yamaha 2 stroke , 4 cylinder, 115 HP motor.

I think its a good deal.
I would have it checked out by a mechanic before I laid down the cash.

I wouldn't go by anything NADA has listed for a price. If I could buy motors as cheap as they value them I would be a millionaire.

All depends on overall condition. The number of hours on a motor are not as significant as how the motor has been used, serviced and maintained.
Make sure compression is good and all cylinders are within 10% of each other.
A good hours test run on the water will tell you a lot if that is possible. If not it should at least be run on muffs.

I did notice that NADA did not have that engine listed, however, I went to a yamaha site and it did. Regardless, they do always list engines ridiculously low!

Unfortunately I cannot actually test this engine out on the water because I'm in Maine and everything is frozen solid with the exception of the ocean. The owner says he did a comp test and each cylinder was right around 130psi (I'm still going to bring my gauge and test it myself).

I also came across an 88 evinrude 140hp running with good compression, never used in salt water. I'm checking it out tonight, the guy is asking $800 for this engine. I know these are two completely different animals here but they both seem like decent deals. I just don't want to make a $2000 mistake... $800 would not hurt as bad.

Yeah, NADA prices on outboards sure seem low. After my earlier post, I looked up the motor I bought last year ('87 Force 85 HP, power T&T). They don't list it with power T&T for '87, but have it for ''89, with a price of $100! Either I got ripped off or they are way off.

But if their pricing for Yamahas is equally off-base, $2000 would be a steal if the motor checks out.

I think they are indeed way off. I have an 86 force 85hp and it will run, but the 3rd cylinder will kick in and out. It's been to the shop 3 times now and it keeps happening, Not sure what is going on with it, that's why I'm going for a newer engine.

I've seen these yamaha's going for ridiculous prices (or people asking ridiculous prices anyway) I've seen them for sale generally around the $4000 mark. For instance someone is selling one on ebay right now with a buy it now price for $4500, but no one has "bought it now". I guess it's one of those things....

From the looks of the picture... that's a 2 stroke

The 115 four stroke is a four cylinder inline motor and I don't believe they were ever made with carbs.

Uh yep, that is not a 4-stroke motor. See that large, 3/4 full plastic reservoir on the side of that motor? Well it's filled with 2-cycle oil.;)

I liked the 90's Yami 2-strokes. Good smooth running motors. You will want to make sure to check compression as mentioned. Also try and get a water test. That's the only way you will know for sure the condition of that motor.

2k is a good deal if it is in good shape.

cheers

Re: Reasonable Price for 99 yamaha 115 4 stroke?

I don't know what I was thinking... It was advertised as a 4-stroke and I was too quick to jump on it, thinking it was a good deal. I went to check it out. I will say that it ran awesome, touched the key and it started from cold, however, when talking to the owner I was told that it was in mint condition, well it wasn't. Scratched, cracked cowl, salt deposits all over the lower unit, mild corrosion, etc... I guess this is expected but again, he said it was mint and that was what I was expecting. So long story short... I didn't get it... Probably should have, but didn't.

Did you check out this one?
You might want to ask for feedback on this motor over on the Johnson/Evinrude section.
The best thing about this motor is that it was never used in the saltwater not to mention the price

I think I'd go with the Yamaha. However, look at the way your seller keeps his stuff--is it squared away and maintained? Your engine will be the same.

I'd worry about the fact that he called it a 4 stroke. I doubt he was trying to trick anyone; I bet he just didn't know. That lack of knowledge could cross over to his maintenance skills--like did he start it without muffs?

The guy I bought mine from thought you could run the motor on the built-in flusher. That told me he tried but he wasn't all that good. But who knows all of it (except Rodbolt?). I determined that his mistake couldn't hurt the motor, just the water pump which I was replacing anyway, so I took it.

I think you have a good opportunity for a good motor there, and you know there is some risk.
