1995 Evinrude 112HP, I removed the armature from the starter case and tried to insert the armature. The brushes would not seat into the slots above the springs so that I could put the armature all the way in. I have removed the base also to replace the brushes. How can I seat the brushes above the springs and insert the armature all the way? The magnetic force is strong but I am not sure if that is my problem. Can I do this myself or did I start something that I can not finish?

Albgar.... Get yourself a wide putty knife. Cut a slot in it so that the remaining knife portion will hold down the brushes but at the same time will allow the armature to pass through the slot.

Now, with the brushes installed in the lower cap, keep them pressed down with the slotted putty knife, then lower the armature and case down onto them and the cap.

Now, where do I send this bill? (grin)
