Reassembling the engine/indexing the distributor

I'm at that point in the reassembly of my AQ131A where I'm ready to install the timing belt but am not sure about when to stick the distributor back in.

My assumption is to install the belt (I understand how to line up the various pulleys at TDC and so forth) and then while still at TDC at number one cylinder, I could line up and install the distributor.

I'm a little sketchy on one part of indexing the distributor. I think that I'm supposed to install it with the rotor pointing towards the mark in the distributor housing and pointing towards the number one cylinder. The part that throws me is that when you push it down into it's slot, it will advance somewhat as the gears engage. Are you supposed to allow for that when you line it up to push down so that when you're done, your rotor lines up right on the mark? Or do you line it up on the mark, push it down and allow it to advance slightly and leave it at that?

Not sure which is right.

Yes, You have to "walk" the Dizzy around to where you need it, you need it to drop in, & line up with cyl #1, after it's DONE it's slight advancing. Make sure you're on Cyl #1 compression stroke, not exhaust stroke, or you'll hafta give the crank one more turn to TDC again, and take out your Dizzy and line it up for Cyl #1 again..

Thanks for the input. I thought that I had thoroughly researched this question, but I just found the procedure in a workshop manual much to my surprise. It says to align the rotor 60 degrees away from the mark on the distributor and then push it down and if you do it right, you'll end up with the rotor lined up on the mark. Well hell...guess I'll have to read a little slower next time.

Eh, use any tower for #1 and shove the mofo in there. Where it points is now #1 plug tower. Don't make it any more complicated than it needs to be. Only women do that.
