well after about 6 months and $900-$1000 ive finally completed my powerhead rebuild. this was my first go at this and am very pleased w/ the end result(startup pending).
the reason for the rebuild was a failure of the wrist pin bearing which ruined conn.rod and piston. below are a couple of pix.while at it i repainted everything but the carbs. the reason i didnt paint carbs was that everytime i decided to do something extra the motor would bite me with a bolt breaking etc.. i dont want any paint flakes dislodging plus all the moving parts besides i can live w/ it like this so thats all that matters.

alright so tomorrow im going to start it for the first time. please walk me thru anything special i have to do.
how long do i let it idle on muffs?
when is it time for link n sync?
boat ramp is 1 mile from me to chesapeake bay, i dont want to forget something and end up adrift if you know what i mean.? i do have a vhf ,btw.
im very excited but very very nervous about this i keep rebuilding it in my head wondering if theres anything ive missed.
my stator has been oozing green stuff so i guess that is next but $260+ is out of the question after this so hopefully it holds.
ive triple checked wiring to factory manual schematic.
i was careful not to disturb any of the timing stops so will it stay as it was or can i expect an adjustment?
what am i missing here?
thats all for now yalls help is extremely appreciated!!!!

Awesome!!!!!

I tried to to start mine today, but I'm having a major ignition problem. I think that I may have broken the stator or something. I'm going to post the question here in a few minutes.

Good lick with the motor! Let me know how it runs.

Re: rebuild complete (pics)

it ran great! all of my timing and such were right on from the get go.max rpm was 4800.
was a bit hard to start this morning, i guess i had to "prime" the motor . after that it ran great. i have a stainless prop w/o markings ill try out next weekend, hopefully its less pitch and cranks up my rpms.well see.
sorry to hear about your problem teslaman a stator is what $260?as i said mines going as well.sux for ya.
i think the manual had a simple test to check the stator its called a charge coil.that should be able to tell you.the other tests could be a bit more tricky since they require a neon tester, whatever that is.
didnt you get a factory manual,if not let me know ill send you a copy of the test.
good luck,ill sleep good tonight!

I got a factory manual, but thanks for the offer. I read the neon tester thing too, I have no idea what that thing is. I did perform the resistance checks and may be OK. The measured values where not right on, but they were not out of the ballpark either.

Its a beautiful day for fishing!!!! Looks like I'll be troubleshooting.

tschamp20 -- You need to treat that engine as if it were brand new and break it in slowly. I would not run it at WOT for very long until it has at least 10 hours on it. And if your WOT is 4800 rpm then you are about 700 rpm short of where you should be.

Hey tschamp,

I got it started!!! It seems to run well, I'm taking it to a mechanic today for linkn'sync and to check the starter rpms.

Did you paint the lower unit and the shaft black? Looks good!

congrats bud, what was it? yes i did paint but i believe the color is charcoal metallic or somethin like that. its made by tempo, i got it from west marine. the easiest paint application ive ever done. some grease remover 120 grit paper and thats it.great paint!2 cans.btw, that paint i showed you fell thru,i think that site, stemtostern, com isnt active.they never processed my order after 2 weeks.
what a rewarding thing it is to put all that time and money into these things and be rewarded with it actually starting.now i dont know what to do w/ myself.
thanks for the advice solittle.i only took it at full for maybe 30 minutes.had to check timing and such. i will def. go easy but thats way easier said then done unfortunately.
thank you everybody who shared info during this experience, if nothing else it reassured what i was already thinking giving me confidance to move forward!

PEACE-OUT
