Rebuild How Often ??

I'm reading some boat classifieds and seeing stuff like '99 motor with powerhead rebuild in '03 and things like that.
I'm concerned about the life expectancy of my '83 Johnson 2-cyl 60HP. I was told it was rebuilt just a couple of years ago but the seller lied about most things on the boat so I assume he lied about that as well.

How often does a motor need a rebuild and what are average costs for something like that?

Outboards rarely die due to wearing out. Lack of maintenance, especially carburetor maintenance, kills them long before wear gets them.

I've seen two stroke outboards with over 2000 hours on them. I have personally put over 600 on one and contributed to over 1000 on another.

Maintain your 60. Decarb it regularly (See decarb in FAQ's) and keep good clean fuel and oil running through it. If you do not have a water seperating fuel filter, add one-cheap insurance. They're available here on iboats.

Biggest single cause of an outboard needing rebuilding is water pump failure.

and the vro1 failure, lack of oil, on the first mixers.

I had a thermostat go bad on my 75' 9.9 that I hope did not damage it. I also had a fuel pump leak enough fuel into the crankcase it killed the engine. All from sitting for many years. I hope after I have spent about $700 on the engine it will all come out right in the end, though.
