Have a 1993 75hp 2 stroke on a 17 ft CC. Compression in all three cylinders is 125 other wise engine is runnig good. Is it time to do something? I stay in the bay but always want my boat to be as reliable as possible.
I'm new to boating and I come to this site alot. Thanks for all the great info posted here.

That's not bad. Does it start okay? Run okay? I would just keep up with the regular maintenance and tune ups.

It starts and runs fine. It seems to make a little rattling noise when in foward gear at idle speed but may be normal as I do not know what it should sound like

its not so much that the numbers are important, its al about the cylinders being within 10-15% PSI of eachother. i generally go off of 10% though. Anyways, 125 PSI is very, very good, and i dont believe you have anything to worry about.

The old sang goes "don't fix what aint broke." You say it runs good and by your compression numbers, it seems to be a healthy engine. I'd leave it alone until it breaks. then make the decision to rebuild or go new.

I asked the question because I thought the compression was soposed to be at around 180 and did not know if 125 was very low or not. Sorry if it was a dumb question but I like to keep all my equipment in the best possible condition (especially on the water) Thank you all for your help

Thanks TD, put a set of blueprints in my hands and I am as comfortable as Ice cream on apple pie but I still have a lot of learning to do about boats, but the good part is its more fun then anything else I've done in years

Re: rebuild it, get a new on or leave it alone?

Merc deliberately leaves exact numbers out of publications. Reason is variables, mostly amount of oil in the fuel mix.

The cylinder to cylinder tracking is important, and as others stated, you are in great shape.

The rattling you hear in F gear idle is "clutch dog rattle". It's the sliding clutch dog (that does the shifting for you) popping in and out (sliding over the teeth) of the rear of F gear.

Your 75 is a 2.3 gear box as is my 90. Being a 2.3 they swing a prop with a lot of pitch on a lighter boat. When you put a big SS prop on these babies, they can and some do rattle. I just put her in gear and get the rpm's up to about 1000 and it goes away. Or I could put a light prop (alum), or one with shallow pitch and do the same thing but I'm not.

Merc has published a brochure on it and it is not supposed to hurt anything. Besides every time you cut the throttle on your boat your engine rpm's drop below the prop rotational speed (screwing thru the water) and the dog is sliding over the gears. You just don't hear it.

What you might do, beins you asked if there is something useful you could do, is to add some Sea Foam to your fuel tank when you gas up. It will clean up your combustion chambers. Now if you want to do something productive, that will really help, is relative cheap, and easy to administer, do that. You will not be sorry. BTDT
