I was running my 1960 18hp motor a couple of months ago when it just died. I was using it as a kicker and it would still turn over when I pulled the cord so I thought that it was probably an electrical problem. (My first mistake) I took the boat home and took the kicker off and left it on a stand for over a month before I got around to seeing what was wrong with it. By that time the motor had frozen. I took it apart and discovered that the exhaust gasket had blown and flooded the inside of the motor with water and years of built up sand and muck. I managed to get everything apart breaking only 3 head bolts two of which came out cleanly, one that is a little off set but that should still be OK. I am still working on the rod bolts, but I am hopefull!

Anyway where can I but a rebuild kit, or really just a gasket and bearing kit. Most places that I see start with motors around 1968. Would this fit my motor or is it different? Everything looks good inside with no scoring and just some surface rust to clean up. Thanks for any help!

Personally, I'd go with a used powerhead because you'd get off a lot cheaper. I don't even think you can replace the bearings as far as I know. I used to see a lot of used powerheads for those on ebay back when I looked for such things for fairly reasonable prices. There are quite a few years that I suspect will fit your motor.

Thanks, I have been keeping an eye out for a complete powerhead, but so far they have been either out of my price range with shipping or I was concerned that they would be worse than what I already have.

Maybe to rephrase this does anyone know what year powerheads will interchange with a 1960 18 hp?

I hear seaway.com carries a lot of old parts, you might try them.
You should also do yourself a real favor and post an ad on aomci.org. That is the antique outboard motor club's website. Those folks are good guys and I can almost guarantee you they will take care of you. Give 'em a try. I'll bet you will be suprised.

I concur. A used powerhead will be cheaper and easier. I see them all the time. I picked up an entire FD-11 today for $60. A good lower unit is harder to find. Maybe harder in NC but easy up here.

Thanks, I have been keeping my eyes out for one, but haven't found the right one yet. Saw one on ebay for 250 plus shipping, but that is more than I paid for the motor.
