Hello all iboats members, I'm rebuilding a 1960's trihull glasspar. This is my first boat and it needs alot of work. I already got the rotten old floor out and the wet foam, and took off the trim around the boat and started to cut around the boat.. The problem that I have is how do I get the top off, at the back it is all glued. It goes transom, glue, plywood nailed to transom, more glue, and then the top of the boat. I have tried to cut in behind the plywood and the transom, but no luck. I have tried to cut the glue and no luck. Can someone please tell me how to get this top off.

ps, have a good one :)

Hey, nice to see another Vancouver Islander on here. Where abouts are you? I'm in Victoria.

About your problem, that looks just like mine did, all I did was sneak a very long sawzall blade in there and cut between the splashwell and the transom, once I got most of it cut out I hammered a long screwdriver/prybar in there, and it broke free.

Good luck.

PS, I also put this in your other thread. You might want to keep it to this thread, since in in the proper forum.

Thank you for the info, I'll give it a shot, I guess I'm looking for a sawzall blade now! Keep your fingers crossed :) and I'll keep everyone posted on how it's coming along. BTW, I live in CR. Parrisw, do you take your tri-hull out on the chuck or do you stick to the lakes?

I stick to the Lakes. It doesn't take large chop very well at all.
I take it CR is Campbell river?

No problem. Get the longest one you can, like 12".

Thanks for your advice, the saw worked! The top is off and it all took about an hour to do. It took four of us to get the top removed, but now the hull is fully exposed. Now I can continue working on the stringers and replacing the transom. Here are some pics of the work as I did it.:)

Nice work on the cap poppin'. It will be much easier for you to rebuild now. Neat little boat, I like the design of that old stripe that was on it.

Yes, the saw worked great. I started to rip into the transom and man is that fun. "NOT" I will put more pictures up soon. It's all comming together very well. What kind of wood is better to use to replace the transom with cedar, spruce or fir. Thanks again for the help.:)

Exterior plywood will be fine for your transom.

I used a marine grade Douglas fir plywood. It was very nice, but also very expensive.

" Lest us forget" one moment to remember, give our thanks.

Well we had a chance to work on our boat today. We, as in my wife and I, took out more of the old foam and fiberglass. Next is to cut out the old stingers and transom. I should have time this weekend to do that stuff. It's coming along very well.:)

Hey, anyone out there that can tell if you can just replace part of a transom or do you have to replace the whole thing. I have one side good and the other side rotten. See pictures of last posts.:)

Do all the wood, leaving the outside skin in place.

The transom is doing more than filling space. It needs to be one continuous piece to provide the needed strength. Replace it all.
