Wow Ed. What perserverance amidst the chaos of all those moves. Can't wait to see the next steps. How did you do the foaming?

Thats looking really good. I love the consols, gave me inspiration for my boat when I get to that point.

Boomyal,

It is two part expandable, kicks off and expands a lot (Don't know the actual numbers about 15x I think) but two 8 oz dixie cups will overfill a #10 can and make a great mushroom. I still have about 2 1/2 gallons left, need any?

Boomyal,

Forgot to tell you how I did it. The stuff is like syrup until it starts to kick (about 30 seconds to get it where you want it to go). I used two 8oz dixie cups (1 for each part) and poured them quickly into a gatorade container and shook up quickly, removed the cap and poured into the void. This stuff is really mean, especially part B which my buddy and I implied meant BAD! Very toxic, stay away from the fumes. Explosive fumes until cured.

I practiced a few times and made some interesting sculptures, until I had a procedure down that I thought would work and was safe.

I let it overflow the stringers and then just used a wood saw (fine tooth works best) to cut off even with the stringer. You can cut it after about 5 minutes.

Peace.

Ed.

Your project looks Great so far!! I love how well the foam turned out. I've been trying to figure out how to do it. Where did you buy the foam that you used?

Ed, Nice job on your boat. I too am restoring a boat, its an 87'22ft. Forester cutty cabin. Most people think I'm crazy! But I dont care. I love doing it, And when I get all nervous and fustrated, I just look at the pictures you had up, and it gives me back my confidence, (and sanity) to see that anything can be fixed. I've been at it since last March. How much do you think it will cost me to put that foam in my boat? being 22 ft.

Re: Rebuild pics finally, almost done.

Thanks guys!

Mark42, I can't wait for the finished photos, this has been a long time comming, I keep saying June, but I think I can speficy a year now, hopefully, this year.

Mark's Joy,
I bought a pail kit which I think was around $300. It was about double what I used, including experiments. I still have about 2.5 gal. left I am not sure what to do with.

Right now (and I didn't keep track of all the money, just to keep my sanity), I have (excluding the motor) around $6,000.00, been about 5 years, so thats $1,200/year, so thats about $100/month, that isn't too bad. At least these are the numbers I tell my wife :)

Thanks again, all.

Stay tuned.

Peace.

Ed.

Looks to be a great job so far. Remarkable that you were able to keep it going after all of the moves and stuff and for so long of a period of time.

I noticed that with a lot of projects mentioned in this forum, most seemed to pour the foam after putting the floor on. Drilling little holes to allow for expansion, etc., and plugging them after the pour. I always wondered why not pour the foam and then trim it as needed before putting the floor on? I know that if and when I start my project I think that is the way I would want to do it, unless there is some real advantage to pouring the foam after the floor is in.

Nice to see it done this way. I always thought it would make it a lot easier and neater job.

Great job! Keep it up so we can see the finished product and hopefully, your maiden voyage after all of that hard work.

Re: Rebuild pics finally, almost done.

Brad E,

My decision to do it this was was:

First, I wanted to make sure I got all the voids.

Second, I was warned that if you do not let the foam expand completely you lose some of its characteristics because it will be compressed.

Third, if you are not really careful you can "blow out" the wood or warp the shape of the void, because the foam will expand unless very strongly contained. I was concerned about not being able to judge the amount correctly and delaminating my deck from the stringers and cross members.

The amount of foam I used is probably overkill, aside from the fact it should float if split in two, I really wanted some sound deadening. When bashing through the chop things could get pretty loud. I will be mostly in the flats on the west coast of Florida, we do get some wave and chop that can make for a pretty rough ride.

Peace.

Ed.

Absolutly awesome, Im totally impressed. :D

I have to hand it to ya, you have done a great job, Which is an understatement. I dont think you could buy a boat as good as that new.

I do restoration on vehicles, I have brought back cars that like your freinds told you, shouldnt have been restored. Now with that said, even though I could do everything you have done, I wouldnt tackle what you are doing. I guess Im a car guy, and maybe I just know better. :p

Continue on!!!
