I was considering rebuilding an E115TLES-B powerhead. I was tols that 135-140 hp was same block. What would a guy have to do to get the extra horsepower? One piston had the rings go out on it when the head gasket let go on top piston, Otherwise in decent shape.

Most here will recomend that you leave it alone because it is more complicated than you think.

Yeah you have to do some machining to the ports, intake and exhaust, and some other very maticulous stuff, you really have to know what your doing and basically need a machine shop. I have also heard that even though the 115 - 140 are the same block, that a lot of guys who have switched from a 115 to a 140 are not happy with the low end torque the 140 provided, you may get a little bit more on the top end, but your hole shot will suffer. Not really sure of the reason. I think that OMC used to just rate the basic same engine at different RPM, even though they make the basically the same HP. Like a 115 makes 115hp at 5500, but a 140 makes 140hp at 5200, something like that, not the real numbers but basically they rated them differently for marketing purposes, at least that's what I have been told, I'm sure some experts here will know the real story if it's incorrect.

If it sounds too good to be true... it must be! Thanks. I have an engine rebuilder friend that was going to clean up the one cylinder. Would it be worth boring out by 0.030 on all cylinders? Would that make any increase in power?

Oh Yeah, machinist asked if I wanted the heads shaved? I understand that there is a copper head gasket to decrease head clearance. I would like to optimize my rebuild while I'm in there. This guy builds only race stuff (High RPM)and good reputation.

You want to get the heads and block machined so that they are flat.

Two questions:

What year is the motor?

What do you plan to do with it?

If you broke the rings that means youre lugging the 115. Changing it to a 140 will only cause the rings to break sooner. Basically you arent getting everything out of what you have now.

This was my first season with this boat/motor comb. The tach wasn't functional and I was trying to determine RPM's using different tachs I had available. Could you tell me that 6 pole setting would be appropriate for the 115?

The most accurate tach is an OMC or Bombardier tach. Yes, it should be set on position 6 -- not 4.
