Rebuilding 50HP carb, Help Please

I'm rebuilding the carbs on my 50 HP Evinrude. I was just looking at the exploded view of the carb diagram and it shows a needle valve bearing on the slow speed needle valve. I didn't see one in the hole when I pulled out the needle valve, if there is one in there how do I get it out?

Yesterday I ran across a step by step process on rebuilding the carbs with pictures, today I can't find it so I can print it out. Can someone give me the link to that thread?

What year and model do you have. Without this info it's almost impossible to provide real info back.

It's a 1972 50 HP Hydroelectric shift motor.

Use a hook bent at the end of a paper clip. Very small hook. You can see them if you look real close. If you are not going to boil out your carbs, I personally don't see anything wrong with leaving those tiny nylon bushing alone.
If you can, blow out your passages with compressed air. Schematic can be found on the evinrude site. http://shop.evinrude.com/

FillupD is quite right. This is called a retainer Part # 315232. If this is still tight in the thread of the needle thenm there is no need to disturb it . However to remove the Jet this retainer has to come out.

If you really need to get it out it can be done with a drywall screw. Very carefully.

Re: Rebuilding 50HP carb, Help Please

I've rebuilt both carbs and put them back on the motor. The engine starts easily but is still running on #2 cylinder only. I swapped coil wires and it didn't follow the coil, still running on #2 only. I installed new plugs and the #1 plug showed no signs of the cylinder getting fuel, the #2 showed traces of oil and carbon.

I've pulled the #1 carb back off and tore it back down. The main jet and jet passageway are squeaky clean. There was fuel in the bowl when I removed it so it's getting fuel to the carb.

What else could cause the carb not to pull fuel from the bowl? The nozzle gasket was in place so that wouldn't be the problem. BTW the #1 clyinder has 85# compression, the #2 145#, don't know if that makes any difference on the the carb drawing fuel.

I'm going to swap the motor this winter, but would like to get it running good enough to chug to the fishing holes for a few more weeks.

That is an awful differance in compression. You may not be getting the compression(suction draw)to operate reed valves and to pull fuel .If you absolutly sure of those comp.readings.Pull the cyl.head off.Inspect piston for damage and cyl.walls for scoring,You definatly have a major problem if readings are correct.
