Im in the process of rebuilding my 1998 200 ocean pro. A piece of my piston broke off and chewed up the head and scored the cylinder. Im wondering what else i should replace while i have the motor ripped apart. I know im already in for a new piston and ring and a new head and gasket set. I was looking at prices for rings.. does 30 per piston sound ridiculous??? cause it does to me

gary you will have to clean and check crank all bearings ,and wrist pins
i usually change all bearings but it is pricey ,but you can inspect use your manual ,me i would take it to boat machinist cleaned crank pistons block and rods they will guide you ,i buy my pistons and rings from my machine shop they know what the bore needs to be for piston brand and they know what
your crank is about let them look it over and mic up your cyls
v6 parts are high just did a crossflow 175 had 1200 in parts bfore machine work and that was without thermos. and waterpump and carb kits

If you scored a cylinder, what do you intend to do about that? During a rebuild you need to replace the parts that are damaged and $30 per piston for rings is not outrageous. Scored cylinders need to be bored and an oversize piston installed. While you have it apart, check bearing journals on the crank and the big ends of the rods. Lastly, you need to determine what caused the failure in the first place. If you simply rebuild the engine without knowing what actually happened, you may get to do the job again. Holes in pistons and broken pistons are generally due to lean fuel mixtures or lack of lubrication. Lean mixtures are generally due to carbs that were in need of rebuilding or air leaks due to bad gaskets/seals. Lubrication problems can be due to faulty injector pumps. Welcome to boating. You do realize that the word B-O-A-T stands for Break Out Another Thousand?

I plan on having the scored cylinder bored and just honing the rest of them. What caused this problem is a total mystery to me. Theres hardly any carbon on the heads or pistons. Neither the piston nor the head look burnt from running lean. It looks brand new. Im gonna take some pictures and post them. The motor has 115 across all 6 cylinders which is why this is such a mystery. Bad fuel?? who knows

If it looks "brand new", water probably was getting in. BTW, if you don't find the cause, you can count on it happening again.
