I recently got my grandfathers boat he has owned since 73. I have never tryed to do any boat rebuild but am good with my hands, so we will see what happens. I know the floor needs to be replaced and am going to do the transom b/c there are cracks on the top on either side of the motor mount. I am unsure on the correct wood, fiberglass and resin to use for this project. Also the boat has been sitting for atleast 10 years, what should I do to the motor before i "try" to get it running? Another thing is the steering was having problems when he used it last, can I rebuild, or buy new? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

First and foremost pics, pics, pics:D
We love to see what is out there and pics make advice much easier!
I would HIGHLY reccomend checking out drewpsters post on his transom rebuild. A++ job and everything you need to know about rebuilding floors, and stringers as well! I am about to tackle another transom rebuild and have read his post over and over and I keep learning from it.
Good luck with your rebuild and load up some pics!

Also meant to ask what kind of steering system you have. If it is mechanical steer, I would suggest replacing it if it's acting up. If it is the pulley-system, a cable may be off a pulley or something. Also, you oughta try posting a thread in the engine forum on what you need to do to your motor. They are a lot of help with your engine techno!

Well, since you are planning on gutting it anyway, pull the steering system out and rebuild it if it's not completely frozen. They are not complicated by any means really.

You will end up loosening the cap at the very least, but that cap looks like it'll be easy to refit once you are done with the interior work.

Best thing before you do anything to the boat though is to take lots of pictures and measurments. Take measurements when you dismantle it and compare notes.

If you end up doing stringers as well as the transom ( most likely ), make sure you get rid of all the old glass tabbing them in and wipe the hull down extremely thoroughly with acetone or any of your favorite wax removing solvents.

As far as materials, Chopped strand mat will be your biggest ally for the basic stuff, and when you get to structural needs, 1708 Biaxial cloth is easy enough to work with, has great strength and thickness building properties, and also woven Roving which is what Glastron used extensively throughout the hull originally.

You'll want to look for a fiberglass supplier near you, or pick one online to have shipments sent to you. Start with CSM and a couple of gallons of resin to get the hang of it, and then go from there. You'll also want Cabosil/microballoons and marine tex for filling in areas and doing basic hull repairs, such as gel coat crack repair, etc.

You'll get more specific advice if you keep this thread alive and provide pictures and ask for help...us Glastron guys are always on thread like these....Jscersca will be around shortly I'd imagine to chime in as he's the most recent person to finish a 'tron here.

This weekend totally worked against me. It rained the entire weekend, so I didnt get much done at all. O well better luck next time. I did pull up what I could get without pulling out tools. At the moment it is not under the barn, it will be the next time. Here are a couple more pictures.

Well looks like you found the usual pile of mush under there. It will be a project. Nice looking hull though. Worth the effort you're putting in to restore her.

Moving slow at the moment but got the motor off this weekend and removed the rub rail. I split the hull but put it back together for transport. I am moving to a bigger storage to do the rest. Will be moving a lot fast in the coming weeks.

But is is so worth it !! the way mine rides now and all the looks i get just going down the road is so cool !!!

One pointier for you now when our grinding use the shop vac to suck up a lot of the dust the grinder makes !! dust will still get everywhere but is will cut it down by over half !!!

If you haven't check out my thread [ pic of work so far ]

Do you have your wood yet ?? if not you need to get it and get it drying here soon !! it will take a good 3 weeks to get it dry !! and also when you have it get a fan on it !!

trash bags, dust pan , hand broom, grinder, sander, sawzall, good respirator, bunny suit, gloves, box of sanding disks, hammer, flat bar, chisel, and if you drink beer let me know what kind so I buy some more stock, that should about cover the demo. The rebuild is a little less intense. BTW is that a 70hp?

Those old johnyrudes are tough as nails and easy to work on I would invest in cmc tilt and trim unit. In the pic I couldn't see a tnt.

Thank you for stepping in. I have checked your build out several times. Looks awesome. I will be borrowing some of your ideas on my project.

I have this week off and will be putting some long hours in on the boat.

Yes that tilt and trim will be after the boat goes back in the water. But it wont be long after. I already puchased all my extra demo stuff I needed. I am in construction so I already had all the tools and really all I needed was a mask and stuff for the grinder. Will have more pics up tomorrow night.
