Rebuilding Evinrude 60 HP Carbs

Good Afternoon all;

I consider myself decently mechanically inclined, but I have done little on my 60HP Evinrude motor. I did change the fuel pump.

Now I want to rebuild the carbs. I have the kits, and the manual says I need an Evinrude special tool 314002 to remove the high speed orifice. This tool costs $26.00 +/- and I don't know how many times I may need this item. Do I really need it or is Evinrude just pumping up the sales.

If you are going to remove the jets, you need a special tool. After breaking the tips of of several tools, I made my own out of a flat blade screwdriver. It is always better to remove the jet, but sometimes it can't be done.
You can clean the jets without removing them. If you have the bowel off, remove the 7/16" drain screw, the jet is behind it. Using a strand of soft copper wire, insert it through the jet while it is still in the bowel. Use some spray brake clean or carb cleaner to flush out the jet followed by compressed air.

I use a welders tip/orifice cleaner.
Each wire has a small file thing,knurled section a little way from the tip.
With the new fuel most are forced to use be careful cause the Ethanol is messing with rubber.
Some needle/seats have rubber tips and some seats have a very small o-ring inside the seat.
Some carb cleaners can swell the rubber and shut off the fuel untill the rubber shrinks back to size.

I use soap and water in most cases to clean the carbs,leave the orifice in.
You can do more damage trying to remove it.
If it's realllllly gunked up use a cleaner and then soap and water.
Then compressed air to dry.Then no WD or any sprays.
Put right back on and fill with gas/oil.
