Rebuilding Mercarb 2 BBL - Check Ball?

Hello Gents,

I am rebuilding a mercarb 2 bbl - and the diagram shows a spring and check ball under the spring plunger that goes in that round pocket in the carb, but I don't believe these parts were in the carb when I took it apart. Would the carb work without the check ball and spring under the spring plunger, or are they sitting in the bilge somewhere?
