Rebuilding my trailer - need help!

This weekend I plan on taking my boat off the trailer so I can give the trailer some much needed attention. My boat is a 24' Robalo Center Console with a deep V style hull. The trailer that it currently sits on is not the original trailer and is missing all bunks and most of the keel rollers. When the boat was salvaged from a local marina it was drug up on this worn out trailer and currently sits on the trailer crooked because of the missing bunks. I have studied many trailers that hold boats similar to mine and I have decided the route in which I will take to bring this trailer back to life. I plan on replacing the keel rollers with brand new rollers because the trailer was originally made to have keel rollers so I figured it would be best to stick with the original design on that aspect.

MY PLAN:

I am going to make two wooden bunks to support the boat on each side of the hull. (I will probably use 4x8's from the local lumber yard and cover them in marine carpet from west marine) I will mount the bunks in an upright position using L brackets and U bolts bolting the bunks directly to the frame. The bunks will extend out behind the trailer about a foot or so and extend to a little past the midway point on the trailer. The end result is two new bunks and a whole new set of keel rollers.

MY QUESTIONS:

1) Will this set-up be enough to support my boat sufficiently?

2) I have heard that putting a coat of latex paint on the bunks before wrapping them in marine carpet helps fight wood rot. Is this true?

3) Do I need to bevel the edges of the bunks so that they fit the contour of the hull? Or can I just leave the ends square?

4) Have I left anything out?

5) Also, I know this is unrelated, but I am using cinder blocks and carpet to support the stern of the boat when it is off the trailer. However, I need something to support the keel. My idea is to construct some kind of cradle to support the keel and set this cradle on top of stacked cinder blocks. Is there a better way to do this without having to buy a variety of tools such as jack stands or keel stands?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Well a photo of the boat and trailer would help alot in providing any opinons on it. But it would be best to get pressure treated wood, Latex paint wont really protect the wood.

You can buld wood craddles to suports your boat when it is off the trailer no problem, just keep in mind that it is prob 3500-4000 pounds and you will want to use heavy lumber for the supports and good hardware.

Ok, good to know. I will look into presure treated wood. I hope you can pick that up at a lumberyard.

Here are a couple pics of the boat on the trailer:

I know these pics are a little rough, but hopefully this will clarify things.

That trailer looks WAY to short for that boat. Also, what is the trailer rated for and how much does the boat weigh?

In that pic, the boat is not fully on the trailer. I currently have the boat pulled all the way up on the trailer and it looks much better.

Im not sure how much weight the trailer is rated to handle.

The back of your boat needs to be pretty much even with the back of the trailer. Is it?

Is it just me or do those tires seem awfully far apart. How does that trailer like going around corners? Much tire scrubbing?

Re: Rebuilding my trailer - need help!

Well, Ive been browsing around my local boat dealer just trying to get ideas on how to rebuild this trailer and I've found that most boats similar to mine in size and shape, hang off the back of the trailer about 1 1/2 ft. or so. However, the bunks run past the back end of the trailer to fully support the boat. This is why I have decided to construct my trailer the same way.

Here are a couple pics of a brand new 24' Mako and its position on the trailer. Directly from the factory, no modifications.

Here is a pic of how I plan to attach the bunks to the frame of my trailer:

I agree that the tires do seem far apart. I am going to completely replace the suspension and the wheel hubs. I am going to go with hubs that have a different bolt pattern so I can mount larger rims and tires on the trailer. This should bring the wheels closer together and make for a smoother and safer tow.

Ok..as long as you put the bunk lumber on end like that and it is similar to the pics you show, that should work. Just make sure that you have the proper tounge weight when you are done.

Yes I think so. Ive read that tongue weight should be 10 - 15% of the gross trailer weight. So, I intend on positioning the bunks just right so it will keep my tongue weight somewhere in this range.

If there is an identical boat, might be worth seeing where the axles in relationship with the boat are. Have to also take the distance from the bow to the tongue into account as well.
