Rec Room Thought

My wife and I are still undergoing remodel of our basement rec room. I still have the bar and kitchenette to do. <br /><br />A couple of months ago I acquired a 89 vision vip without any running gear. She brought up the idea to use one side of the boat for the front of the bar. Then with it being an open bow and its configuration, we thought about turning that part into a hot tub/spa. We would mount the front bow to look like it came through the wall. <br /><br />It sounds good, and probably look good, but my concern is what would a potential buyer think of something like this. We plan to leave the rec room and its goodies when we do sell. Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance....

Sounds Way Cool to me.......<br /><br />I wouldn't worry about After the Sale........<br />Most every time Someone buys a house,<br />The 1st thing through their mind is to Remodel.........

I second it. Go for it and post some pictures when your done. Life is too short to worry about the resale value. Go for the fun value.

That sounds like an awsome project, do it!<br /><br />Doing something cool to your basement isn't going to hurt your resale.

No way will it hurt the sale. Depends on how long you plan on keeping the house before selling it (which it sounds like you already know you are going to do), but you may not recoupe your full investment into the house, but it will certainly NOT be worth less when you are finished than it is now.<br /><br />GO FOR IT AND HAVE FUN DOING IT! Post pics when completed, please!

If you are planning on selling your house anytime soon I would say don't do it. Beside not getting any extra money out of your investment, you will probably turn off many potencial buyers.<br />Check with a realtor.

If you plan on selling anytime soon do not do it. You may think it is really cool and unique. A potential buyer may see it as a real eyesore and big bucks to remove.

Wife and I figure we will stay here for another 5 years or so and then move somewhere in Tennesee. <br /><br />As for cost, I do everything myself and get most of my materials at wholesale. When I get it done, you bet I'll post some pics. So far I have about 40% of it done. I'm wanting to find an old potbelly stove to put in place of my woodburner. With the pool table, dart boards, and pinball machines, I think the house will sell fast when I do sell it. My first house I completely remodeled inside and out sold for what I was asking. Also the first person that looked at it bought it. The real estate agent said it was in a bad location and it would take forever to sell and probably wouldn't get what I was asking for it. I proved her wrong! I still think I could have gotten more out of it, but those agents surpose to know their stuff.<br /><br />Thanks for the words of encouragement!

Hi James, I told my wife that it needs to be by the river. Eastern part hopefully. I grew up in the hills, still live in the hills, and gotta keep living in the hills. We don't care much for flat land or snow for that matter.<br /><br />Don't want any large cities to live in, just something in a good community. She will be an RN and I'm a service tech. So neither one of us should have problems finding work. Wait....I got that wrong, She will have no problem finding a job, I will be too busy fishing and boating...

sounds like a great idea SS .. <br /><br />the trick (as with anything) is in the details.<br /><br />if tastefully done and finished off correctly and cleanly it'll most definately be a selling point to those with an eye for something not made by a cookie cutter!!<br /><br />get out the scale and compass and sketch some elevations and details so you can get a thorough understanding of all involved.. <br /><br />jumping in head first on something like this will cause some major headaches if its not thought through before hand. the time planning and detailing on paper prior to starting will be well worth it! <br /><br />great project! .. sweat the small stuff!<br /><br />You and the future owners will enjoy it!<br /><br />good luck to you!

I will agree with Barlow planning is a good idea. when I used to desgin kitchens the more planning that was involved the better the job went and turned out. As far as moving you should check out my neck of the woods we are not far from water in all directions. Small town with pleanty to do.

Yep the planning is the most important part. It seems it takes me longer to figure out each detail than it does to do the job. With so much going on in my remodel, I need everything to flow into each phase of work. <br /><br />The kitchenette/bar is going to have a small dumbwaiter that will go to the upstairs kitchen island. So when the downstairs is done, it has got to be right on cue with the remodel of the upstairs kitchen. I don't like doing things twice, or have to cut and make changes to new stuff. <br /><br />Thanks James, We plan to take vacation next year and check out your state. I was in Millington for a year when I went to Avionics school in the Navy. I had fun in Memphis, but don't think I want to live there....
