recharging my trolling battery for the first time...

Ok, just bought my first boat (Javelin 170FS fish and ski) and took it out for the weekend to the lake. I wanted to ask about recharging the trolling battery. I have a everstart charger that will charge 6 amp or 2 amp trickle charge in 12 volt. I wanted to be sure that the trickle charge would be the best method for recharging this battery.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, TJ.

Deep cycle batteries do best when charged at a low rate for a long time.

Good luck. :)

Also, is there any need to disconnect the connections to the battery before I place the battery on charge?

Thanks for the quick response!

As long as everything is turned off and there are no shorts or leaks, I see no reason to disconnect it. I don't.

Also it's best to recharge the battery as soon as possible.

Just a side note here as to what I do.
I know some people won't like it, but here goes.

My boat is set-up to charge both my batteries up front thru my trolling motor plug.

I have a wire at my trailer hitch that is hot all the time that I plug into when I leave the lake or house to charge my batteries to and from the place to fish.

Always have done this and have yet to have a problem.

Just my .02 worth.

Also, it's good practice to have you batteries on a battery switch - that way you can prevent it from being deeply discharged when not in use.
