recirculation tubes disconnected = poor idle?

I finally got my 86 johnson working good, but i still have a problem with it refusing to idle in the water, but fine on the trailer. In the process of cleaning the carbs and replacing the fuel pump and lines I noticed that the p/o had blocked off the recirculating system. the hoses were cut and all the nipples behind the carbs were blocked off. Could this be the reason for my poor idle? If so does anyone know of the proper routing of these hoses? my internet search for a diagram wasn't very successful and i really can't wait 3 weeks to get a manual for this motor, summer is short here and i'm burning up valuable boating time messing around with this idle problem

I haven't got a diagram for the system but it has to be hooked up and functioning properly. It is figured into the calibration of the idle system for the carbs.

Thanks cretepumper for the graphic, but my motor doesn't have any nipples on the bypass covers for the hoses to go to. Would those have been removed when the system was butchered and plugged with bolts, or would there be another design for this motor?

Your mtr is post vro and the recirt check valves are in the intake manifold. The fuel primer lines run to the back of the carbs
