Recoil help

1979 Johnson 6 hp. I’m trying to replace the recoil rope and having trouble with the recoil gears lining up with flywheel. Any ideas what to replace to repair this?

Weird unexpected problem that I had to take the roller pin and gear off to see. The part is completely warped from years of use.

Umm, hmmm. Doing it all wrong and pretty sure you probably ruined the gear.

I just got this motor 2 week ago. I was trying to change out the pull rope and it wasn’t lining up properly. I took the video to show that. Recommendations on how to better Change pull rope? I was going from a video on YouTube where someone took a 9/16th bolt and turned it counter clockwise 14 times.

I’d love to learn proper way to fix things on outboards. If y’all have any good video suggestions for this I’m all for it!

Great news! I was able to order an interlock assembly for $18 brand new and it works flawlessly. The recoil was moving around causing tons of slop in it. The teeth in the gear seem to be working just fine. I will report back if i have anymore issues.
