My recoil spring broke at the point where it bends to fit into the starter pulley. I have tried to re-bend the coil with pliers and vice grips but it breaks. Is there a way to bend it or do I have to pay $35 for the rewind spring? I have more time than money.

You need to buy a new spring. You can't bend them unless you use heat and even with that they will break again and it will be sooner than later.

And likely out in the middle of the lake. Spend the $ and do it right.

I totally agree with the above recommendations as well. If this were yard equipment, that would be one thing. But being a boat, just buy the proper replacement part and happy boating. JMHO!

OK. Thank you the recoil on this motor is the worst one I have ever used. Bad design.

They work quite well, actually. Particularly well when the manual is followed for proper reassembly, rope length and tensioning of the spring. Very simple design.

I vote rig it up yourself. Keep a piece of paracord or small diameter rope onboard and you always have an emergency starter in case it fails.
