Just reroped and rewound recoil sarter spring but now the three coggs that grab the flywheel don't come out like they are supposed to do. Can anyone fill me in on what I might have done. Everything is as it was when I took it apart.

Thanks

Re: recoil starter

Look at parts list on BRP's website. BTW, you haven't told us what motor!

Re: recoil starter

OK, you probably don't have the equalizer cup/spring/spindle assembled properly.

The equalizer cup is the piece that the pawl springs hook to. Inside that is a coil spring. Place the cup on the spindle and get all the coils of the spring up on the step of the hub before inserting it into the pulley.

You DO have the 3 little springs on the pawls, right?

Re: recoil starter

I had problems with the 3 little pawls on my '57 35hp also. They're tough to get working. I like the later models with the single pawl a lot better... easy to fix and work on. My '58 10hp has the single so maybe they changed in '58...

A picture is worth...something

The equalizer assembly
Also, notice the locating pin that must be aligned with hole in housing.

Re: recoil starter

If anyone is still following this thread, I would love to hear the trick to connecting the main recoil starter spring to both the housing and the bottom of the recoil starter mechanism.
Thanks in advance,
Gary
