Can anyone recommend a good shop or mechanic for engine work near Buffalo or Tonawanda, NY? I've got a VP 5.7 GL in a 1998 Wellcraft 240 SE that could use some work this off-season. If I had a place to do it, I'd do it myself. But that is not the case, and I can't seem to find any recommendations, just ads. Thanks in advance.

It seems there are no specific recommendations for my area. Short of that, any suggestions on how to go about identifying a good marine mechanic? I have asked around, but never seem to get a definitive answer, name, phone number, etc. Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you talking about general maintenance or pulling the engine and rebuilding it ? Your post is to vague.

My guy comes under the heading of "mobile mechanic". He doesn't advertise and he doesn't accept new clients. So, I can't help you there. He does the work at my house. Can't be better than that...! If I needed the engine pulled he would take it to his shop...if I let him, which I wouldn't because I would sell the boat first....LOL. There are 2 other mobile guys that DO advertise. I won't post their names, but be advised to stay away from them.

As far as Marine Dealers, I would endorse Brobeil, Collins and Bow & Stern. You'll get a good job at a fair price. When I say "fair", don't expect it to be cheap. I won't name the bad dealers, but if they are not on the list they are either bad or I have no experience with them.

There is a new guy in Wheatfield called SP Marine. I've heard good things about his price and work, but I can't endorse him personally one way or the other.

PS - never heard of Nautech, so they are not on my good OR bad list.

It will likely be more than general maintenance. It needs a compression test, to see how things are, never had it done in the 2 seasons I've had this boat. It runs fine, but consumes a lot of oil. It seems to be a well-cared boat with a fair amount of hours (no meter), but it may be time for more than just tune-up items.
