Recommendations for an oil drain setup for a V/P 4.3L

Hi,

I just started my winterization work today, by draining the oil and pulling the filter. I got most of it out, but I'd sure like a better way. I'm currently using a drill driven pump with the dipstick sucker (sounds like a XXX movie title).

I've heard about the oil drain hose setups. Can someone point me to one that would fit the 1996 (NC) Volvo 4.3L (GL) with a cast/ribbed oil pan?

When I look at the current fitting, there doesn't seem to be a real drain plug, just the end point for the dip stick tube. I haven't seen anyone saying that they had to lose the dipstick, so I'm either looking at the wrong parts or the current dipstick thing breaks down farther than it looks.

Any thoughts?

You have the male hose fitting on the end of the dipstick. Why not use one of the many pumps be it hand or electric that fit onto that?

I use the PAR hand pump.

i got a buddy that has one of themz drill driven oil pump siphones. he says its a drag. just like you. i got a vaccum type oil sucker. a tempo brand i think, i suppose any brand would do though. it works real good. when it starts slurpin, ya got it all. can hear the pan bein empty when ya stick the probe all the way in and it hits the empty pan... ting ting..
only thing that i don't like about a vaccum oil sucker is it is slow. but i got time when i'm workin on my boat...hopefully.
i don't think ya should be haveing to remove yer dipstick tube.
if it has a drain plug, it would be at the pan's lowest point. underneeth the engine. that's where ya'd be hookin up a drain hose to. if ya got a drain plug, if ya got room.......try an vaccum oil siphone. they work good....themz drain hoses look messy to me......

Mercruiser makes a drain hose setup that you can pull thru your garboard drain plug on the transom of your boat. Problem is, you can't use it on your Volvo. There is a special bolt with seals and a block for the dipstick tube that has to be installed on your pan so you can use the dipstick.
When you change your oil, do you run the engine and heat the oil up first? If not, that is probably your biggest problem. Warm it up first and almost any pump will work.
You also must have a good tight seal so you don't have any air leaks, and DO NOT use a small tube stuck down through the dipstick tube. It's not needed on any of the newer (approximatly 85 and newer) engines. They all had tubes that went to the bottom of the pan.

if you don't use the tube through the dipstick tube because the dipstick tube goes to the bottom........

does this mean just a short piece of hose from the pump to the dipstick will draw all the oil out?

i've been sticking the tube all the way down because I thought that was the way.

Depends on what engine you have, but like I said, with the newer ones you just have to attach the hose to the dipstick tube, NOT down in it with a smaller tube.

93 Mercruiser 4.3 and I'm wondering how many years I would of been sticking that tube down in there before reading something like this.

I keep my manuals where most people keep their Good Book and I must of read over that tip somewhere........

Thanks to everyone for the comments. Don, thanks especially for the how the dipstick tube was set up. It was hard to visualize this from the manuals (OEM). I have been running the motor prior to this (*), the oil was still steaming when it came out, but I've been using that little hose. I'll re-rig the pump with the hose fitting adaptors. I had just assumed that this would not do as good of job.

Need to work on the boat parking position, even with the tongue all of the way down, the engine is still tilted just a bit towards the stern.

(*) Had a nice warm day here, so I used the old excuse about having to warm up the engine for a last run on the local lake to make sure that the Stabil was evenly distributed and into the carb. The lake was glass smooth, found that I got 4400-4500 rpm at WOT with a GPS reading of 41mph, with 3 adults and 2 kids along for the ride. Just prefect, its a shame that its the end of the season, but freezing temps are expected next week.
