Recommendations for new Home printer

I am looking to buy a new home printer. The one I have is an HP deskjet 670c which is 10 years old. The only problem is that it is slow and the cartridges cost a fortune.

So i am looking to upgrade to something faster that can do photos and has a relatively low cost to operate. My budget would be under $200. Could go more if substantially better.

I have heard good things about the Epsons and like the idea of separate cartridges for each color. I am not really interested in the all in ones as they have more functions than what I need.

I will be installing this connected to a wireless print server so USB is all that is needed.

What do you have and how is it working for you??

For Photos i have a Cannon S800(over4 years now) which also has the 6 INK tanks that you change only what is used


It is able to sit for long amounts of time and NOT clog unlike the Epson MY SIL is going to have to throw out because the just will NOT unclog no matter how many cleaning cycles i put it through


I know you do not want a multi-purpose printer BUT i bought my daughter a HP5780(128 dollars) FOR COLLAGE and Wow DOES IT PRINT FAST

I wish they sill made a NEW Deskjet 1000C as it is still rock solid and can print on 13 X 19 paper

Canon Pixma is a good buy and produces great quality photos....

I like HP printer products. The cartridges contain a new print head in each which is a good thing. Updated drivers and docs are easily found on their site too. We just recently bought a DeskJet F4140 (All In One) because we needed a scanner and it just happened to be a printer too. It prints photos pretty well. We didn't do a lot of research which is unusual for us.

What I usually tell people when they ask is to shop backwards... Find the printer you think you want, then go price the cartridges. Rinse repeat. Printers don't always come with a cable.

I've using an HP 7660 for 4 years with no problems. I think it's been replaced by the D7460.

I have 2 printers. One for my photos, and one for everyday printing. My photo printer is an Epson Stylus Photo 380 w/ High Definition printing, and my everyday printer is an Epson Stylus CX4400 all in one printer. The Photo printer takes awhile to print, but it prints very high quality photos, and the all-in-one printer can scan, copy, and print in either color or black and white.

I paid $120 for the photo printer, and around $60 for the all in one. Both are easy to use, and the ink cartridges are readily available at Wal-Mart and Staples.

I just, three months ago, bought one of the new Kodak all in one printers. So far I am very pleased with the unit. It prints very very nice photographs, and is very cheap to replace the cartridges.

HP Photosmart C5180 Printer, Scanner, Copier. Works well, individual inks, that don't cost a lot. 4 months, so far, so good.

OK I did my research and I think I narrowed it down to the HP 7460. This thing has the individual cartridges and WI-FI.

We'll see how it goes.. Anything would be an improvement over what I have.

As much as I hate HP as a company it is tough to beat their printers I'd rate Canon 2nd.

Now that being said the price of Ink cartridges is INSANE what a racket.
Did you know it would cost over a BILLION dollars to fill an Olympic size pool with INK...on a side note printer ink is 90 percent water....DOAH!

It is always the consumables that generate the profit.

Axiom: The cheaper the printer; the higher the cost of the cartridges.

Walgreen's has a refill service and it's less than a 1/3 of the cost of a new cartridge. I've had one refilled; so far, so good.

I have to agree with that. I have a Canon I860 that I have had for 3+ years and love it. It has 3 color tanks and 2 black tanks (one for text and 1 for color) and it works great. It prints awesome pictures. The cartridges cost less than $15 each. If you buy a printer with one color and one black cartridge then you will replace the color cartridge (often at $35+) when one of the colors goes dry. I only replace a color cartridge when either cyan, magenta or yellow go dry. This printer has made me a canon fan for life. My mother has a Canon Pixma that I encouraged her to buy and she loves it as well. We both replaced HP printers with our canons...........

Whatever you do, make darn sure that you can buy cheap, discounted ink for the printer from sites such as www.inkamerica.com and others.

Its all about TCO (total cost of ownership).

Companies are almost giving us the printer.They come free with computer packages.It really is about selling ink.
