I pulled the pin on the shift shaft and pressed in to release the linkage. I am now attempting to reconnect after replaceing the water pump and cant seem to get the connection back in. Is there any special procedure for this, or is it just a matter of trial and error? It's pretty tough to see or reach the connection and with having seen one disassembled completely, I am not sure exactly how to do this. I am so close to having this thing back together, yet so far.

I use a straightened clothes hanger, with a small hook bent in the end. If you can see the top of the shift rod, you can manipulate it into place. Good Luck

Hi, I,m not 100% sure about your engine but on my 60 (twin looper) the offset at the engine (top) end of the shift rod has to face the drive shaft in order to align so possibly you may have rotated the rod by 180 degrees ,, hope this helps
