Rectifier Again

I may have gotten ahead of myself with the last posts. Info on other posts I read :The tach doesn't work it the rec. is bad? Volts at the battery should be 14.5 volts?{motor running 1500rpms] I am comfused.<br /> My tach works and the boat's volt meter reads just under 12 volts.[running 1500rpm] I was going to replace the rec. this weekend but now I am not sure it is bad. Could I have a problem with the voltage regulator? Or the rec. is the problem. I hope someone can walk me through the problem.<br />Thanks in advance for the patience<br /> Dead Eye

Dead Eye, the tach can work with the other side of the rectifier shorted to ground and not producing voltage so you can have a tach working and low voltage. Can we have motor info?, does it have a regulater? or just a rectifier did you ring test the 2 yellow wires from the alternator--Bob

1988 150 xr4.<br /> It has a regulator. What is a ring test. I have 20 dollar multi-tester. You mention alt. do you mean stator? How would the Rec. get shorted to ground?<br /> Thanks, Dead Eye

A ring test is to test a stator ( these tests are for the 40 amp. system) for a complete winding yellow to yellow to make sure there is not a opening in the winding .05 to .19 ohms(any reading will tell it's good), then from either yellow to ground to make sure the stator is not shorted to ground. To test the reg. Check voltage on the purple wire it must be the same as battery voltage when the key is on. Then with a AC volt meter ck voltage with the engine running (1000 RPM +) if AC voltage is more than 16 VAC on either of the yellow wires the regulator is bad. If you need ohm test spec for the stator I can get them for you. or they are on 2B6 Mercury manual 90-816249-1---Bob
