My in-line 6 merc 950 will only stay started when I hold the ignition and starter in start postion. Is the stator and rectifier used for continued engine opperation or just for rechargeing the battery?

Re: RECTIFIER Problem?

stator creates electricity and rectifier changes that over to dc for battery charging

Re: RECTIFIER Problem?

The only 950 Mercurys that I know of were either standard or battery CD ign. Built in 1966 to 1968 I belive. IF your engine is in that group it has a bad connection at the plug in or a bad ign. switch, the stator would have nothing to do with running all it does is charge the battery

I'm not familiar with that motor but the problem you describe is that of a bad ballast resistor. If your motor has points, look for one.

Re: RECTIFIER Problem?

Thank you All for your replies. This engine has a six cylinder distributor system so I don't think it has points. The last time the engine ran, it drained the battery dead, so I suspect my stator or rectifier is toast even though thanks to you folks I now know those items don't actually keep the engine going. I'm going to pull the remote ignition and see whats up with that. Thanks again very much for your input.
