Folks.
I just helped my buddy install a Sierra Marine aftermarket rectifier / regulator for his 1988 50HP Johnson outboard. The orignal had melted RED wire to chassis.

The OMC part had Three Yellow wires with color patterns and a RED output wire.
The Sierra part has Three Yellow wires but no distinct color patterns to match-up properly.
Upon "random" installation and testing, the RED wire output shows DC output that's very erratic. The multimeter in DC shows a wild range of 6 to 19 Vdc.

What's up here? Bad Stator?
BTW: Motor runs fine with or without.

Cheers Corey.

On my 3 wire rectifier it did not matter where the yellow wires were placed they were interchangable.

You can check the two yellow output wires from stator to reg/rec for voltage .I believe it should be around 18-20 V AC.

Melted red wire to the chassis????? Chassis is ground -- red wire is 12V. No wonder it melted. I hope you had the red wire connected to the battery via the solenoid when testing. Never run a motor without a battery connected. Regulator/rectifiers don't like that and its the reason your readings are erratic. You will also void the warranty if you happened to have popped the new unit.

Upinsmoke!!

Sorry, what I meant to say was that the OLD rectifier needed replacing because the RED wire "somehow" overheated and shorted to the engine body. This was probably due to a loose wire to the main battery (or my buddy was trying to charge TWO batteries at once.....)
The NEW unit was installed correctly but next step is to test the STATOR for a maximum AC output.
We'll get a chance this weekend when the motors back in the lake.

Cheers.
