Rectifier/Regulator questions

Hi;

How hot should a rectifier/regulator get?

What is the max voltage the regulator should bring a battery up to?

My manual does not give any tests for the rectifier/regulator other than replacing it. Are there any tests I can run?

Can a rectifier/regulator break a stator or power pack?

This is for a 96 9.9 Johnsons High thrust regulator BRP 0584890.

The first link looks interesting and I will see if I can do those tests.

The second link looks like it is tachometer related which does not seem to apply to my situation as I do not have a tach.

I am trying to figure out a persistent problem where the engine runs ok without the cover off, but faulters and dies after 15 minutes with the cover on. The motor also has burned through two stators and power packs within a year.

I've checked for exhaust leaks and replace the exhaust gromets and power head gasket.

Someone suggested that the stator may be too hot and that it is grounded which might be causing my problem so I am investigating that route.
