Rectifier/Regulator Wiring Question

I just replaced the rectifier/regulator on my Evinrude E200STLERK, and my tach still isn't working. The tach is getting power, but the gray wire on the back of the tach isn't getting a 'signal'.

I noticed on the rectifier/regulator I had a gray wire and a purple wire. Does the gray wire lead to the tach? My local service guy suggested I run a wire from my rectifier directly to the tach to make sure it's working on the rectifier side so that I can determine if it's a broken wire causing the problem.

What does the purple wire lead to?

Could you please tell me again, on how to find the signal source? Should my multi-meter be set to DC or AC volts?

I tested the back of the tach, and got -12.75v on the purple lead with my meter set to test DC voltage. When I tested the gray lead wire with the engine running ..... nothing with a reading of "0.00"

Please explain any response. Electricity or current testing is my 'weakest suit'.

Purple is switched 12 VDC and has nothing to do with tach operation ... it's for internal illumination. Check the grey wire for continuity from engine to tach. The tach need the grey and a ground (black) to work.

I did 3 things ....

1)I tested the gray wire at the tach ..... nothing!

2)I ran a wire directly from the rectifier gray wire to the tach gray wire .... nothing!

3) I tested the gray lead from the rectifier .... it fluctuated from 5.75 to 5.97 v.


What does this mean?

Check the grey for continuity (ohm it) ... sounds like it's not all there from motor to tach.

It reads 1 on the Ohm test.

Try a different tach ... yours sounds bad.
