Recurring Problem

1994 ChrisCraft 197 Concept

Last winter I had my engine head rebuilt. The valves on the head had somehow burnt and my engine had only been running on 6 of 8 cylinders. Symptoms associated with this included a "shaking" of the engine compartment, as well as a clicking noise coming from the engine.

When the shop returned my boat to me (as well as a hefty bill!), they said that the engine was now running smoothly. Of course they had to "fake a lake" to test the engine since it was the dead of winter.

Now I am selling my boat through a broker. When he first took the boat out a couple weeks ago the engine began to overheat immediately. We figured that it was probably the water pump impellar. I had that replaced and that solved the overheating problem.

He took the boat out again and this time several things occurred. 1) It took a while for the boat to plane out. It would ride on the nose for a while. 2) The clicking noise still comes from the engine. 3) The boat will not go above 3500 RPM. 4) The boat will not go faster than 25 MPH. I belive that the "shaking" syndrome has stopped, however.

I called the shop that did the work this past winter. They suggested that the carb. might need to be cleaned out. I had this done, however, last fall. Plus, the clicking noise suggests that an original problem wasn't fixed. They said to bring the boat in and that if it was something wrong with the engine work they had done they would make it right.

My questions are:
1) Should I have to pay for diagnostic time since when I took it in last winter they were supposed to do a complete overhaul?
2) If there is something additionally wrong with the engine--not related to the head rebuild--should I have to pay for labor? If so, how much, since they should've worked on this when they pulled my engine out previously.

Thank you!

Re: Recurring Problem

1) Depends on #2...
2) If it's something they "fixed", then NO...
If it's something else, Yes, it's a different problem, that proabably Couldn't be found with the " fake-a-lake"... They contracted to fix the heads,... carb. or other problems are Not included in what you've already paid for... So, expect to pay the going rate for additional fixes....
