Red Eye Bearing Buddy and cutter pin trouble

I installed the Red Eye Bearing Buddy system in my trailer. This is the 1.9 size hub. The problem I have is that the cutter pin dug a trench in the bearing buddy. Is that normal? I would think not. I used a cutter pin that the round part fits inside of the spindle nut cuts and I bent the other side as close as I could and even bent the ends inside the nut cuts. I don't know what else could I have done. In my previous post I wrote where I found part of another bearing buddy system in the hub. I wonder if that is what also happened to that other system.

Let me know if any of you have run into this...

Thanks!

Re: Red Eye Bearing Buddy and cutter pin trouble

Took the Red Eye Bearing Buddy out of one hub and touch both hubs to make sure they were equally cold. Went for supper and took the panoramic route... :) Anyway, about 5 miles later I stopped and touch the hub without the Bearing buddy and it was as cold as before I moved the boat. Touched the one with the Red Eye and it was hot again, not as hot as before from the 20 some mile ride, but still hot. Made it back to work and the side without the Red Eye was still cold but the one with the Red Eye was hot, hot, hot... So the problem is definitely the friction between the bearing protector and the cutter pin.

Is this a known problem? Maybe this Red Eye interior wall is thicker than other bearing protectors?

I can try to cut the cutter pin shorter and see if I can get the parts that are bent to bend to the nut cuts, but not sure of that.
Any info will be appreciated.

It sounds like you have the solution.....Make sure the cotter pin is pushed in as far as you can....give it few taps with a hammer on the loop side and then bend the ends over as close to the nut as you can.

I will be darn... I cut and bent the cotter pin over the spindle and this kept it from grinding in the Bearing Buddy and the heat is gone. Took a trip to the lake and lost one Bearing Buddy in the highway... When it rains it pours....
