Red Lever ?

Hello Everyone!

I have a new to me 1987 175 hp Evinrude. I just started it up, supposedly, for the first time in a couple years. I got it to run, but was at a fast idle, and really started searching around the carbs. I found a small cylinder with a red lever on it, on the starboard side, right next to the carbs. I moved the lever, and the RPMs came down. I shut off the engine, then moved the lever in both directions. Swinging the lever aft, I found what felt like a detent, and that is where the higher RPMs were. The lever moves forward and brought them down.

Can anyone tell me what this is and does?
Pics included.

Thank you for your help...

Re: Red Lever ?

Thanks for the info, Blazinmonkey....

The cylinder is mounted on an angle. By down, do you mean all the way aft, so the lever is inline with the cylinder, and in the detent position, or all the way forward to the end of the swing, or in the actual down position, that would be in the middle of the lever throw, somewhere?

Thanks again...

Re: Red Lever ?

The red lever should be back over the cylinder, where the engine idles the best.

Re: Red Lever ?

I first encountered the red lever on my 140 v4 on my Winner CC.
Had just brought it home and ran it on a hose. Accidentally moved it while changing the fuel filter. Engine kept flooding, about drove me crazy.

To clarify the red lever is the solenoid bypass. It is normally closed. When you press in on the key the solenoid is opened electrically to allow extra fuel into the engine for starting. When the battery is dead and you must rope start, you move the lever and give the bulb a squeeze. This will put the fuel in for starting. Once started move the lever back to closed.

Re: Red Lever ?

The length off the red lever should be parallel to the length of the solenoid for normal operations.
