Anyone ever seen red marine grease ??Hauled my Mako home this weekend and forgot to bring a spare grease cartridge. Was forced to stop at a very convienient West marine to over pay for the same grease I usually get at Walmart.Only this time it was red.Marine corrosion control/wheel bearing grease.I have used both green and white but never red.Any thoughts???? Re: Red marine grease???

I believe both AquaLube and Amsoil Marine Grease are red. They (at least AquaLube) repel water ... which I am not in favor of. I'd rather have Petroleum-based grease for wheel bearings. Problem with greases that repel water is that they repel it to the bearing surfaces. Petro-based lets the water mix into the grease which keeps beads of water away from the bearing surfaces. I've actually seen bearings rust when full of water-repelling grease. In other words, what would seem like a good idea ... isn't. Fine if you have Bearing Buddys to keep pressure on the grease to keep water out, bad if you just have regular caps that can allow water in. Or if you neglect to keep the Buddys pumped up. :(

On the Positive side, they are considered Premium Quality Synthetic Marine Greases. The price proves it!

Interesting. Pay more, get less, and replace your bearings sooner...step right up folks!

I could be wrong regarding Amsoil. Haven't used it based on my experience with AquaLube. And even AquaLube may have changed since the early 90s. In defense of the mechanic, I'm sure he was putting in what he thought was the best thing available. And in certain applications it probably is. But...

Re: Red marine grease???

The type of grease really doesnt matter.I use the trailer twice a year.15 minutes each way.New hubs 2 years ago and I pump up the bearing buddies before we pull out of the driveway and then, when we get to the ramp, I set up my dockslip before submerging the trailer which gives the bearings plenty of time to cool off and then I pump a little more grease in just before the trailer is submerged and then a little more after it comes out of the ramp.I had bearings go on me once while intransit and now I am totally overkill with being careful and greasing. The way I do it really does not allow for water intrusion so I grease and grease and grease and never submerge the bearings while warm or hot.Too much grease is better than not enough.Charlie

Then you'll be fine. Of course you realize that most trailer bearing failures happen on the first or last day of vacation. You know, it's late on Friday and you break-down on the highway. Or on Sunday late afternoon on your way back. You're screwed either way. Never Fails!!! ;)

One thing, you might want to get whatever they used. I don't know how true it is, but supposedly Synthetics are incompatible with Petros. I've always wondered what would actually happen if you mixed the two.
