they tell of the year the motor is made. certain years had red, some had blue, some had brown, etc etc etc ....thats it

Need a serial number for that but gonna be very early 70's at the newest.<br /><br />Take your s/n and look on oldmercs.com<br /><br />There's a year chart on there.

thanks for that info nos4r2.im surprized that it can be that old its in mint condition,under the cover is like brand new you could eat your dinner of it.it also starts and runs perfectly.i have owned and used it for the last 6 years without a single problem.thanks again nos

Red Bands were circa ~~'67 thru '71 and they went to the solid blue band in '72. Last year for the 6HP was 1968, they were replaced by the new 7.5 in '69.<br /><br />That 6 is a good little motor, just keep clean oil in the gearcase and change impellers regularly as the rubber vanes take a set when they sit for extended periods of time, then they won't pump water worth beans.<br /><br />Keep it well-flushed if running in salt water. This motor has a mild-steel driveshaft which is prone to corrosion at the oil seal area, then you get lots of water in the gear oil.<br /><br />HTH......ed
