Red Stator Confusion

Mercury 40 4cyl electric start 1990 2 cycle

I developed no spark today and am sure it’s the stator as had lowered voltage coming from the rec/reg recently and missing at low revs.

I’m wanting to buy a stator but am confused mine is a 4 wire 2 green/white & 2 yellow (red stator) I think 16amp part no 398-832074-A3

when I look at the parts list online for my engine serial the following parts are listed (see photo) but it doesn’t mention the stator part currently fitted? Some seem to have 6 wires and some are black - totally confused as to what I can fit ?? Any rules of thumb here?

Disconnect the Stator-wires to the rectifier and see if you have spark, if you have spark replace the Rectifier.
without the serial# of the motor it would be hard for us to find the right Stator

Bought a good 2nd hand stator - still no spark
so bought a cheap Chinese switchbox off eBay for £26
And now it’s sorted!!!
engine running better than ever
no misfire
the beep when you turn the key is somehow now as clear as a bell when before it was a crusty crackle
trim and tilt is also strangely running perfectly when it was sluggish and slow to respond
i sanded all the Earth (negative) ring terminals on the corners of the switch box before refitting - wondering if that made the difference?

now getting the full 5500rpm at WOT - I was only getting 5000 before

Happy Days ! Long may it last

grounds & their wires are equal so not more important, I'm glad it's working for you

Keep all your Battery-cables & other wiring connections clean and tied
