red stator replacement wiring question

hello ,the motor is a 91' merc 90 3 cylinder sn# do43449.
had no voltage from stator 398-9710-a14,
bought a used red stator kit no.398-832075-a17 that came with a module .

My questions are numerous and for that I apologise

a) will this new stator work for my application?

b)If so, do I need to use the module that came with it?

c)Also the wires going to the switchbox are 'blue' and 'blue-white', not 'red' and 'blue' like my old one - is the 'blue-white' supposed to go to the red terminal on the box?

d)Do I need to rotate the new stator differently from the old one's position?

thank you very much.

Re: red stator replacement wiring question

The A17 is a 16 amp stator and A14 is a 9 amp. You will have to use the adapter module and also change the rectifier to the 16 amp unit. Install the same way as old one came off if markings are missing. I myself do not replace customers stators with red stators due to the failure rate of them. For 9 amp engines with switchbox replacement # 174-8778 or 16 amp with switchbox #174-9710. Engines using CDM modules 2075K1 or 2075K2. Good Luck!!

Re: red stator replacement wiring question

Thank you very much for your very helpful response.
It brings up more questions though, sorry, maybe I should break them up in consecutive posts?

Is the difference between the 9amp and 16amp stators only in the
charging circuit?or does it affect ignition, hence the module

Is it necessary to change the switchbox when changing from a 9 amp
stator to a 16amp

stator A17 and module
switchbox 332-7778 I also have a 332-5772
will this work?oh yes and the rectifier,do you have a part no.?
thanks again, hey all you guys have some nifty sign offs
I'm going to have to come up with one ...

Re: red stator replacement wiring question

I have the same problem - the new red stator I got has a blue and a blue-white wire coming from the adapter module. But the switchbox has terminals for a blue and a red wire?
Should I connect the blue-white wire to the red terminal on the switchbox?
Did you figure it out Oldtruck, or anybody else - that stator was expen$ive and I don't want to fry anything else!!

Re: red stator replacement wiring question

Got the motor running!!
But I don't know if my voltage regulator will handle the 16 amps stator..
The part number on the regulator I have is #854515.
Does anyone know if this regulator will work?

Re: red stator replacement wiring question

no but I'm pretty sure I need to change the regulator/rectifier to a 16 amp model to go with the higher power stator
Can someone confirm this? when switching out a 9amp to a 16amp stator the regulator MUST be changed as well ,and to what model? thank you

Re: red stator replacement wiring question

aLL IS good, talked to the tech at the local marina, and he says that the
regulator that I have IS the one that comes with the stator kit,it must have
been changed at some point, guess I'll connect it up and see if she still runs
