Re: Redoing boat carpet project questions

Haha.. I've been thinking about those 'eyes but it's still a tad early and not until I get this boat done!! This crazy weather and rain recently has the great lakes steelheading going...

Are rivets a better option than screws? It seems screws are less expensive all in considering the rivet gun I would need to purchase however never done this before so I'm all ears on best options baring in mind the aesthetics and ease of install.

Rivets are an easy install and are actually a lot cheaper than SS nuts and bolts. Once you buy the gun you're set for rivets from then on.

Rivet guns aren't that expensive for the one handers, from $12-$20.

Anybody that owns an aluminum boat should have a rivet setter and an assortment of rivets... it should be a law.;)

The rivets worked great for the gunnels, fairly quick and easy.

(sry about the weak pics, hard to get a good shot on an iphone in the poorly lit storage space)

Gunnels needed to go on first, next are the side panels, then front and back decks.

Josher, looks really nice. From one of your 1st pictures I thought this was an Alumacraft. Hopefully my Alumacraft will turn out as nice as your Sylvan. I have been thinking of doing a combo of carpet on the rod locker amd Livewell and then using vinyl on the decking but the wife would like everything with carpet.

Re: Redoing boat carpet project questions

Hey guys, Sorry to reopen this old thread but I just remember I never posted pics of the final results!! Here they are... these were taken in Dec, I'm getting the boat out of storage today and mounting the rest of the hardware. Thanks again for all the help and walking me through this project. It's definitely a labour of love!!!
