Redundant Power Options

In the fall I added a second bildge pump 500 GPH. I believe the factory pump is 350.
Right now they are both connected to the same battery.

The boat is an 18 foot open bow. The single battery has been more than enough for normal use. The goal is to reduce the risk of sinking when the boat is docked.

What should my next step be? A second battery? onboard charger?

I had planned on a second battery with switch and an onboard charger but money is a little tight.

If I purchase an onboard charger for two battery banks can I use it to charge one battery until the second is purchased? Would there be a need for a second battery if I had a charger?

Any other suggestions?

Re: Redundant Power Options

If you have shore power (120 volts AC) to plug the charger into, you wouldn't need a second battery. If shore power is not available, the on-board charger does you no good.

Re: Redundant Power Options

I do have shore power available. Nothing fancy, just a GFI outlet and an extension cord.

I may just buy a charger designed for two bank in case I add a battery later.
They are listed as 12v/24v. Does that mean I can run either or is the first bank at 12v and the second at 24v?

Is there an issue running a charger for two banks on just one battery?
