Reed damage

Mine is a 9.9 evinrude and it spits bak out the carb. reed damage??/ can i fix the reed????? the fuel float tank won't stay full. fuel pump???<br /><br />thanks<br />charlie

Could be the reeds. You can not fix it you have to replace it.

If the motor is running lean at idle it will cough or spit back. Sometimes hard enough to die. Is that whats happening or are you looking at a mist of fuel coming back out?

actually it doesn't run when i throttle up it dies and i have to squeeze the bilb again and restart it. it tries to idle awhil and the eventually dies. spitting out of the top front hole of the carb when i squeexe the bulb.<br />charlie

may need a carberrator rebuild or primer bulb may be bad. Start it and squeeze the buld to see it it stays running. <br /><br />Or Neelde valve and seat maybe or float not adj right.<br /><br />-nate

Sorry about the double post. From your description I doubt any reed damage. Do a complete carb teardown and a thorough cleaning. I recommend a good, several hours, soaking in carb cleaner then rinse parts with aerosol carb cleaner and blow out with compressed air making darn sure every orifice,passageway and metering jet is sparkling clean. Re-assemble with a new carb kit and give her a try.

Charlie....can you give us a year or model number?<br /><br />Is this engine new to you? If it's new to you, has it set long before you aquired it? Or have you had the engine a while?<br /><br />Will the primer bulb pump up tight? Notice any fuel running out the carb throat when you prime the bulb?<br /><br />How far out is the low speed needle turned from gently seated?<br /><br />Spark and compression good?<br /><br />Although it does sound carb related, history always helps in getting a direction to go.

actually no the bulb doesn't sqeeze up tight like my other outboard always does. ??? next move.??? but i do think a complete carb tear down is warranted and will take that advice. any more sugestions will be welcomed however.<br /><br />charlie

okay,<br />i sorted out some of the problems but now i do have to sqeeze the bulb from time to time to keep it running?? otherwise it dies.<br /><br />Charlie

Or fuel pump may be bad, or your fuel lines may be bad. Check for fuel leaking out of any fuel line connections or cracked fuel lines.
