Are the reeds the same on a Powerhead that produces horsepower from 150 to 200 horsepower or more, XP/GT or standard engines?

Reeds should be the same....that's not where the "extra" power is coming from on the GT/XP series....

Ok,
If it's not in the reeds, is it in the ports, port timing, size of the ports, (exhaust/intake) Carbs, jets, exhaust tuning, heads, or compression ratio?

Are we still talking about the 150 XP in the other thread? Or are we now talking about the 2.6 XP/GT?

Well, both. I am interested in how horsepower is increased on two-cycle outboard engines. I understand how to get more hp out of my v6 Buick GN. The outboards puzzle me.

Its still the same deal as we talked about in the other thread. If two blocks have the same bore and stroke then you get into port configuration differences (port timing, port area, port shape, finger ports etc), cylinder head combustion volume, squish band area, combustion chamber swirl patterns, intake volumes, exhaust flow, etc. And all this is assuming were talking about stock piston configuration.

If the two blocks have the same port configuration then all the other factors still apply. Sometimes its simply a matter of one motor being "rated" at a different rpm than the other.

The Boyesen reeds certianly make for a smoother running and more responsive motor in almost any case. In the case of a V6 crossflow, the stock reeds start to flutter around 6300-6500 rpm thus limiting the rpm. The Boyesens will allow the motor to get past this rpm range.

Dont get too hung up on horsepower numbers. Torque is what counts. Reduce your slip % and youre bound to be more efficient.

Good luck!

Re: Reeds & HP / Same PowerHead?

Thank you my friend,

I think I will concentrate on overhauling the carbs on my XP this winter and get it in top tune for this spring.
Other than a complete new paint job, new decals, thermostats, sparkplugs, complete new VRO system and a water pump this past summer. This engine has not been touched since 1985. It has always started at a touch of the ing. key and has always been very spunky, while loving to drain my gas tank.
Talk to you later this spring when I get her up and running again.

Your pal,

DoferGofer

Sounds good. Get her purring and establish your baseline. We'll figure out the slip % and get you going.

Good luck!
