Re 25Hp Johnson Seahorse. I have read other posts to solve my problem but my motor has no markings on the transom, the only numbers I can find are :<br />39395EA 25Hp 7CJ<br />Can someone interpret these for me, ie what is the model, year etc.

Thanks for the vote of confidence walleyehed, but I can't do much with those numbers either.<br /><br />If you don't find the welsh plug, could you describe your outboard a bit or better yet post a picture? Where exactly on your outboard did you find those numbers?<br /><br />25hp engines were recently manufactured between 1969 and the present. Does yours look older than that? If not, which style lower unit does it use - the type where the exhaust exits through a fin behind the propeller and the end of the propeller comes to a point, or is it the type where the exhaust comes out of the hollow propeller?

Didn't know of welsh plug, but have found it with the following A0703142 Nothing like that in the Johnson outboard list.<br />Exhaust is above the prop which is pointy.<br />Previous numbers were attached to a tag by the carburetta.<br />Poor photos but I hope they will help.<br /> http://www.ezprints.com/Album/images/5/12759201_img.jpg <br /> http://www.ezprints.com/Album/images/5/12759199_img.jpg <br /> http://www.ezprints.com/Album/images/5/12759200_img.jpg <br />Thanks for taking the time to help.

Not for me either, but at least we can narrow-down the possibilities. That's a pre-thru-hub exhaust which leaves out the 1990s. I think they became thru-hub in the late 80s. There was also a big old green thing back around 1954. There are white ones and green ones of the more modern variety. I believe the hoods have always been white, but in the early 1970s they had green bottoms. Tell us what sparkplugs are in there and that might help too. The numbers are usually on the clamp that attaches to the boat. Older ones were tags that were riveted on to one of the clamps. Later ones were stickers that were on the swivel bracket. The later ones had splined propshafts and older versions had smooth ones. I sure wish I could see those pictures. Can you e-mail me one? Click on my webiste (man and house icon above). My email is on the bottom left.

Re: Refered from general forum

RAF, I'm thinking before 1980 - but not much.<br />Since you're outboard is obviously not thru-hub, that would suggest a 1977 or previous model year engine. The exception here is if it was a commercial engine, in which case it could be anything into the late 80's.<br />Unfortunatly, that's just the serial number you found on the welsh plug. Often we can roughly figure out the year by that using this forum as a database. But since that's an Australian serial nubmer, and there's very few of them reported here, I can't find anything even slightly helpful.<br /><br />Can you describe the ignition system a bit? Does it have separate coils (at the end of the spark plug leads) and a powerpack feeding the coils? Any numbers on either?<br /><br />Thanks for the pictures, I'll try digging up some pics for comparison.

The lower cowl on the 25 HP changed in 1975 when the larger block came out. The 25 didnt come with thru-hub exhaust untill 1988. The point/condenser ignition was replaced by CDI ignition in 1978/79. Based on the hood design, I think it is a 1978, does is have CDI ignition ??

Re: Refered from general forum

Whew guys it's getting a bit technical for me but here goes.Plugs are BR7HS. Leads from plugs go to little black boxes which I assume are coils & numbers are 582106 OA 21 7S.Wires from these go to a larger black box with what looks like a circuit boad in it. Numbers here are CD2 ?82452 OA 10 S31. ? is worn but looks like a 5 or 6.<br />To others re pics My first attempt at uploadind pics to web so I could've got it wrong. <br />Thanks for your patience anyway.

Re: Refered from general forum

Thats the CDI ignition. I think you are somewhere between 1979 and 1983, then. Those were good motors, I had several. It seems your plugs are NGK, this ignition system is designed to work with Champion, which most prefer. QL77JC4 is the right choise.

Re: Refered from general forum

I saw your pic on my email, but I have a virus and can't do much with my mail right now. It looks like a 1982. That should be within a year one way or the other. Good luck with it. Fine motor.

Re: Refered from general forum

I can't determine anything from the numbers or the pictures for sure. I will hazard a guess though. My guess is you have an eighties comercial model, possibly made in Hong Kong. Over the years OMC produced many special models for various reasons, military, commercial, etc that are not listed on the main steam list. Most all the parts used to create these motors are standard (common parts). The trouble is they may not be common to the same year and size of motor.
