I was given an old maple table that is in sad shape. The finish is shot and I might even resort to sanding it down a bit with a rotary/vibe sander.

Any suggestions for a good finish? Polyurathane? Oil? I want a nice finish and use this as a table in my kitchen.

I was also given 4 oak chairs in bad shape that are all cracked and split... also in dire need of finishing. What do you suggest for glue? Gorilla glue? Hide Glue? Elmers? I know I will be clampimg the life out of them while they dry... should I try to drill and insert wood pins in addition to the glue?

Just one of those projects.

Bob

Okay.... sanded down the table (solid maple not veneer) but not too completely... just enough to remove the old finish. I replace all the screws and used epoxt to fill in the holes for added grip. Now it's solid. There are some spots that will never be back to perfect. I have been finishing the top with tung oil, rubbing then using 0000 steel wool (low gloss at wife's request) and it is shaping up very nice.

As for the oak chairs ... they are not good quality (but they are better than a folding chair when we have a crowd over) and they were all split. I used a higher grade water based wood glue (tite bond) and clamped them. The chairs appear normal but I plan on adding wood under the seat to provide more strength. I will add a thin sheet of plywood across the seat bottoms.
