Refrigerator Thermostat

I just got a great deal on an Avanti Kegerator...so I thought. It seems that the unit is known for a "less than stellar" thermostat. Alot of complaints about large fluxuations in temp (from 20* F to 60* F) without touching the dail.

My question - how hard is it to replace just the thermostat? What should I look for in a replacement? How "universal" are they? I know NOTHING about refrigerator repair but I have SOME common sense so...I think I should be able to swap a part.

This is a "preemptive strike"...I don't know at this point, if I will have the same problems as others...but I would like to know what I am in for ahead of time.

Thanks.

Re: Refrigerator Thermostat

I have a Haier kegerator that was free. The main problem was the door wasn't sealing properly, had to adjust the hinges/bend the door. Replaced a thermostat on a fridge once-it was just wires , but hidden. The place you buy the parts from can tell you how to do it.

Make sure all the coils and condensor are clean. When they get real dirty they wont cool very well. Seems hard to believe that a thermostat for a fridge would go bad. Furnace I can see but a fridge just seems wierd.

Re: Refrigerator Thermostat

It seems that this particular unit is know for "out of box" thermostat failure. It is a new floor model so...pretty clean. I have been monitoring it all day and it runs from 34 to 43 degrees. So it should be ok. Just don't want to freeze my homebrew.

I will check around at the local fridge repair places and see how much they run etc.

Re: Refrigerator Thermostat

Another thing, they don't defrost- take it out the back door once a month, and loose the water hose inside it- fastest defrost known. Otherwise, so much frost builds on the back, that keg holds the door open.
